What Is This Tool?
The AVL Parking Tracker is a real-time parking intelligence tool for Asheville Regional Airport (AVL) in Fletcher, North Carolina. Unlike simple parking availability displays, this tracker predicts parking demand by analyzing both current parking status and upcoming flight schedules.
How It Works
Data Collection
The tracker collects data from multiple sources:
- Parking availability: Real-time spot counts for all 5 AVL parking lots (Daily, Hourly, Garage, Shuttle North, Shuttle South)
- Flight schedules: Arrival and departure times, gate assignments, flight numbers
- Historical patterns: Months of parking and flight data stored in a local database
Predictive Analysis
The tool doesn't just show current availability—it predicts future demand:
- Flight correlation: Incoming flights bring arriving passengers who free up parking; departing flights bring new parkers
- Weighted scoring: Prioritizes premium lots (Hourly/Daily) that fill first
- Time-based patterns: Recognizes peak times (Monday mornings, Friday afternoons) vs. quiet periods
- Risk assessment: Displays "Plenty Available" / "Some Available" / "Limited Availability" based on combined factors
What Makes It Different
Most parking displays show static numbers: "453 spots available." This tracker provides intelligent context:
- "453 spots available + 3 large arrivals in next hour = 'Limited Availability' warning"
- Historical data shows "Fridays at 4pm typically fill within 90 minutes"
- Flight schedule indicates "Morning departure rush starting—arrive early"
💡 Example: If 600 spots are available but 5 flights with 600+ passengers are departing in the next 2 hours, the tracker will show "Some Available" or "Limited Availability" to warn you—even though current numbers look good.
Why This Exists
Asheville Regional Airport is one of the fastest-growing airports in the United States. The ongoing AVL Forward expansion ($400 million project) is increasing capacity from 7 gates to 12 gates, but parking demand has outpaced infrastructure growth.
The problem:
- Peak travel times see parking lots fill completely
- Travelers arriving 90 minutes early sometimes can't find spots
- No predictive information about when lots will fill
- Official displays show current status but not trends
The solution:
- Data-driven predictions help travelers plan optimal arrival times
- Historical analysis reveals patterns (e.g., "Monday mornings are risky")
- Real-time + predictive intelligence reduces parking stress
- Free community tool to help Western North Carolina travelers
Who Built This?
This is a personal project by a local developer in the Western North Carolina area. As a frequent AVL traveler who experienced parking challenges during peak times, I built this tool to:
- Help myself and others plan better
- Learn from data patterns
- Provide a public service to the Greater Asheville community
This is NOT:
- An official AVL Airport website (that's flyavl.com)
- A commercial parking service
- Affiliated with any parking lot operators
- A booking or reservation system
This IS:
- A free, independent community resource
- Open data analysis and visualization
- Built to help Western NC travelers
- Sustained through community support and select local partnerships
How Accurate Is It?
Data freshness: Updates every hour with the latest parking and flight information
Prediction reliability: Risk assessments are based on:
- Real-time parking availability
- Confirmed flight schedules from official sources
- Historical patterns observed over months of data
- Weighted scoring that prioritizes high-demand lots
Limitations:
- Unexpected events: Weather delays, flight cancellations, and special events can affect predictions
- Data lag: Hourly updates mean very rapid changes might not be instantly reflected
- External factors: Construction, overflow lot openings, and policy changes may impact accuracy
Best practices:
- Check the tracker within 24 hours of your departure for most accurate predictions
- If tracker shows "Limited Availability," add 30+ minutes to arrival time
- During peak times, have a backup plan (Shuttle lots as alternative)
- Verify official rates and policies at flyavl.com
