How It Works
Data Collection
The tracker collects data from official airport sources:

Why No Live Lot Availability?
With its September 10, 2026 parking redesign, the airport stopped publishing real-time lot occupancy on flyavl.com. Until an official source returns, live availability cannot be tracked anywhere — this tool shows the published facts and points you to flyavl.com for official information.
💡 Example: Flying out on a Monday morning? Check the live departures feed to see how busy the morning rush looks, choose from Premium ($22/day), Standard ($15/day), or Shuttle ($12/day) parking, and arrive early — the airport recommends two hours before boarding.
Why This Exists
Asheville Regional Airport is one of the fastest-growing airports in the United States. The ongoing AVL Forward expansion ($400 million project) is increasing capacity from 7 gates to 12 gates, but parking demand has outpaced infrastructure growth.
The problem:
- Peak travel times still see parking fill completely
- Since September 2026 the airport no longer publishes live lot occupancy
- Parking names, rates, and entrance traffic patterns changed, confusing frequent travelers
- Travelers need one place for flights plus current parking facts
The solution:
- A real-time flight tracker to plan your drive and pickup times
- Current published lot details with rates and space counts
- A clear explanation of the old → new parking product mapping
- Free community tool to help Western North Carolina travelers
Who Built This?
This is a personal project by a local developer in the Western North Carolina area. As a frequent AVL traveler who experienced parking challenges during peak times, I built this tool to:
- Help myself and others plan better
- Learn from data patterns
- Provide a public service to the Greater Asheville community
This is NOT:
- An official AVL Airport website (that's flyavl.com)
- A commercial parking service
- Affiliated with any parking lot operators
- A booking or reservation system
This IS:
- A free, independent community resource
- Open data analysis and visualization
- Built to help Western NC travelers

How Accurate Is It?
Data freshness: Flights and published parking details update every few minutes (typically within 10)
Data sources:
- The airport's official flight feed for schedules and status
- Published lot details (spaces and rates) scraped from flyavl.com
- Historical patterns observed over months of data
Limitations:
- No live occupancy: The airport no longer publishes real-time lot availability, so fullness cannot be shown
- Unexpected events: Weather delays and flight cancellations can shift schedules
- Upstream changes: If flyavl.com changes or removes its lot information, tracking pauses until restored
Best practices:
- Arrive 2 hours before boarding (airport recommendation) — earlier on peak days
- Pick your lot in advance: Premium, Standard, or Shuttle Lots A/B/C
- During peak times, have a backup plan (rideshare, taxi, or drop-off)
- Verify official rates and policies at flyavl.com
Privacy & Data
What data is collected:
- Parking lot details — names, spaces, and rates (public information from AVL)
- Flight schedules (public information)
- Website analytics (Google Analytics) for visitor counts and behavior

What is NOT collected:
- Personal information about travelers
- License plate data
- Payment information (this site has no transactions)
